So this morning, I called the sweet guys at The Auto Doctor in Evanston and asked if they would replace it for me (I had an old one in the garage). “Sure, come on by!”
15 minutes later, I carried the plate in with me. Charlie (not the one who answered my phone call) took one look — and said:
“Is that all that was left?”
Something about his deadpan delivery and the twinkle in his eye set me off — I laughed for a long time, one of those real belly laughs that make you red in the face and a little winded.
What a gift that was — simple yet witty — not at all complicated. And a gentle reminder to keep in mind when life takes laughter away.
